No free rides
Michigan Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer wants to give every high school graduate in the state a no-strings-attached free ride through college.
As for the question of where the $2 billion or so would come from to pay for this little perk, Whitmer offers a murky proposal to eliminate tax credits and incentives, but, so far, she hasn’t said which ones.
Aside from the funding issue …
What about recent college graduates who left school with massive debts? What about parents who had to remortgage their homes to finance their sons’ and daughters’ educations? Will Whitmer’s plan include financial relief for them, too?
Help with tuition for serious students would be a great thing. But it should be tied to mandatory public service - in the military, the Peace Corps, or something similar.
